The turning, grounding and polishing process makes a coarse, roughly dimensioned metal rod or bar into a shaft with a straight and smooth finish. The turning step brings raw material to a desired size, whereas a grinding wheel is used to remove very small amounts of material to achieve the precision dimensional tolerances during the grounding procedure. The last step in the process is polishing, which utilizes a polishing wheel to obtain a required smooth surface finish.
